The Minister of Cultural Heritage and Activities, Dario Franceschini proposed the day for the commemoration of Dante and yesterday (17 January 2020) has been approved by the Council of Ministers. The day chosen is March 25, which is considered by many to be the day on which the long journey to the afterlife begins.
The proposal of the national day dedicated to Dante Alighieri as well as being the subject of several parliamentary acts had collected the adhesion of intellectuals and scholars and prestigious cultural institutions from the Accademia della Crusca, to the Società Dantesca, to the Dante Alighieri Society, to the Association of the Italianists to the Italian Society for the study of medieval thought.
These are the words of Minister Franceschini:
“Every year on March 25, the date that scholars recognize as the beginning of the journey into the afterlife of the Divine Comedy, Dantedi ‘will be celebrated. A day to remember Dante’s genius throughout Italy and throughout the world with many initiatives that will see a strong involvement of schools, students and cultural institutions ». «A year after the celebrations of the 700 years since Dante’s death – added Franceschini – there are already many projects under consideration by the Committee for the celebrations chaired by prof. Carlo Ossola. Dante – concluded Franceschini – remembers many things that hold us together: Dante is the unity of the country, Dante is the Italian language, Dante is the very idea of Italy “.
