Argentina wins the Copa America after 28 years of waiting: Brazil beaten 1-0 at the ‘Maracana’

Argentina won the Copa America after 28 years of waiting. The Albiceleste coached by Scaloni triumphs 1-0 at the ‘Maracana’ against Brazil thanks to a goal from Di Maria on an assist from Rodrigo De Paul. A success expected by an entire country that raises its head after the tragic death of Diego Armando Maradona which took place only eight months ago. In the match between Messi and Neymar, the soft touch in the lob of the PSG playmaker who beats Ederson on 22 minutes. It is the network that decides the match. Few opportunities in the second half with a Selecao unable to react and the Albiceleste who always proved to be very solid in defense.

But it is above all the victory of Lionel Messi who at 34 and after having won everything with the Barcelona shirt, wins his first overall title with Argentina. The ‘Pulce’ did not particularly shine in this Copa America final but had in the last minutes the great opportunity to be able to close the race and put the seal on the game. Messi won it against his friend Neymar in a match between two great champions. Before this success, Argentina had lost four out of four finals: three of Copa America: 2007, 2015 and 2016. And one at the World Cup, right at Maracana, against Germany in 2014.
Neymar blocked by the defensive wall of the Argentines

The match was balanced until the goal of Argentina’s advantage arrived at 22 ‘of the first half thanks to the delicious lob of Di Maria on an assist from De Paul. Brazil tries to shake itself as it can by holding on to the magic of its champion: Neymar. But the PSG phenomenon was trapped in the wall erected by Scaloni’s defense with Otamendi who managed to close all kinds of spaces to the opponents. Selecao had also managed to find the equalizer with Richarlison but the young Everton striker was then stopped by the referee for offside. The pace of the match does not change and Argentina thus finds themselves alone having to defend the advantage to take the game home.

Tite tries it by playing a final match with five strikers, but the only one to really try is Gabigol who, however, also in this case you have to clash with Otamendi and with the Albiceleste goalkeeper, Emiliano Martínez who, after the penalties saved against Colombia, it is decisive again. Messi fails the knockout blow after a perfect suggestion from De Paul finding himself in front of Ederson all alone before losing control of the ball being anticipated by the Brazilian goalkeeper. It matters little. At the triple whistle Rosario’s el diez can finally celebrate the victory of his first title with his senior national team that is now heading straight towards next year’s World Cup in Qatar.

  1. Well done Argentina. I saw the second half which was quite scrappy. I suppose you expect that in such a high-stake game. Thanks to Maradona more than 35 years back, I am a lifelong supporter of the Argentine national team.
